Any plans to paint the valve covers?

Those aren't the valve covers I'm using. Those are just some old covers pulled off a 60s corvette that I'm using to keep the valve train clean. I restored the original pontiac 400 covers and those will be going on the motor when all is said and done.

Phew, 'cause those things are really letting the engine bay down

Looking good! One suggestion would be to ditch the Edelbrock if it's in the budget. The secondary air-valve can't be adjusted and for most Pontiac's it doesn't ramp at the correct rate, producing a stumble upon wide open throttle. I learned that the hard way with the AFB cloned Edelbrock on my 455.

What's the engine specs on that btw?

Sadly it's not in the budget. Down the line I want to get a properly tuned Qjet. Engine specs? I have no clue, I am aiming for 300hp. I installed a more aggressive cam, 4 barrel intake, headers, and higher performance heads.

Yeah, actually, you can see the restored covers sitting on the roof of the car.

I hear ya on that one. The QJet is a great carb when dialed in. I'm running a carter thermoquad 9800S on my 455 now. Even without being tuned up yet it runs much better than the Edelbrock AFB clone.

I hear good things about the Thunder AVS though. It's secondary air valve is adjustable which I'm sure make up a lot of the standard performer carb's shortcomings. Again, expensive though :(

Oh, no doubt. Then why don't you have them on to keep the valves clean?

I don't want to scratch the nice covers.

Makes sense.
